I stumbled across this article a while back and started a draft post that I never got around to finishing. At any rate there are some excellent pictures and an interesting look at the transportation system in Chiatura, Georgia (former Soviet republic, not the state). The cable cars were installed during the Soviet era to help out with the manganese mining industry that the town is built around. The equipment looks to be in horrifically bad shape, and frankly I would be too scared to ride in most of these. But the pictures are amazing in a ruin porn kind of way.

Oh, nice. I don't know whether or not it's being done, but I hope the dilapidated cars and so-on are because all the money's gone into making sure the cables are being correctly maintained. As long as they are, the system ought to still be safe - might break down, but won't fall down.
